Who might fill the NFL coaching openings

When NFL coaching jobs open, the names Jon Gruden, Bill Cowher and Tony Dungy immediately surface as potential candidates.

Much more likely than any of those Super Bowl winners returning to the sideline for 2013 would be the hirings of more obscure assistant coaches such as Mike Zimmer, Mike McCoy and Gus Bradley.

And Jon Gruden's brother, Jay.

Sure, some of the best-known coaches, including Andy Reid and Lovie Smith, who lost their jobs Monday, will be in the mix. So might college coaches Chip Kelly of Oregon and Bill O'Brien of Penn State.

Maybe even Nick Saban, although leaving Alabama for the NFL is a long shot.

iPhone 6 Rumors: Top 3 Features Why You Should For Apple?s Smartphone

As 2012 comes to a close, new rumours emerged claiming that the upcoming iPhone 6 will pack sharp, new features under its belt.

Samsung Galaxy S3 beat Apple's iPhone 5 as the best device of 2012. This will probably inspire Apple to work even harder in making the iPhone 6.

The iPhone 6 is rumoured to be released early next year and one of the possible reasons of the rumoured early release date is because Apple will be launching a redesigned iPhone.

Reports indicate that Apple is looking to switch to a 6-month cycle instead of a 1-year cycle with the iPhone to be more aggressive against competitors such as Samsung and Google. This means consumers may be able to snatch up a colourful iPhone 6 around March 2013.

This rumour is supported by Asymco's analyst Horace Dediu who believes that Apple's future will indeed consist of a new generation of device every six months. This assumption is based on the statement of former Apple CEO John Sculley.

Follow us?? Google Plus

According to Sculley, the company is "going through a very significant change now in terms of product cycles," and that "now it's really introducing products twice a year."

Below are the reasons why you should wait for the upcoming iPhone 6.

  1. Super HD+ Retina IGZO Screen Display - The advantage of the IGZO (indium gallium zinc oxide) display is the thin assembly, bright colors, and high resolution that require less LEDs, which would mean more energy efficient.
  2. A7 Chip Quad Core Processor - The rumoured A7 quad core processor is claimed to be twice faster and smaller than its predecessor.
  3. Near Field Communication (NFC) - There is a rumour that Apple lost to its rival Samsung Galaxy S3 because the former was afraid to support NFC. All sign points to Apple adding this feature in order to keep up with the competition.

It is initially reported that the iPhone 6 will include a "Super HD" screen display and camera. Speculations claimed that it is beyond the Full HD displays in HTC Droid DNA.

This notion is backed up by an analyst. According to Jefferies stock analyst Peter Misek, "the iPhone 5S has a new 'super HD camera/screen, a better battery, and NFC,' and 'possible updates include an IGZO screen for Retina+, 128GB storage."

Other rumours claimed that iPhone 6 will steer away from its usual hues and will offer 6 to 8 different colours to attract younger generations in buying the handset.

Strong economy ahead for South Florida if fiscal cliff is averted

An improving economic year is likely for Florida in 2013, unless the D.C. political machine crashes the economic party with a sudden and huge increase in taxes and across-the-board spending cuts starting in January. The uncertainty surrounding next year?s fiscal policy has already slowed growth of holiday retail sales and has created uncertainty in private sector business plans.

Assuming a benign outcome on taxes and fiscal spending, the economic fundamentals of the state suggest an accelerating economic recovery from the so-called ?Great Recession? of 2008-2009. Various factors suggest it will be a better year for Florida residents and businesses, especially economically diversified regions like South Florida. Among them:

??The all important real estate markets will continue to improve at a steady pace. Single-family home prices are attracting buyers, especially with historically low-mortgage interest rates. The multi-family residential markets, in key areas of Miami-Dade County such as Brickell, Key Biscayne, Sunny Isles and Coral Gables, were strong in 2012, with large projects planned for those areas as inventory dries up in 2013.

??The macroeconomic environment continues to improve, especially for globally oriented regions such as South Florida. Unless elected leaders allow the nation to dive into a deep ?cliff? that lasts for several months in early 2013, the U.S. economy is expected to grow a moderate 2-3 percent. This is positive for Florida?s tourism and real estate sectors, and for our ability to produce and export other goods and services to the rest of the nation.

At the global level, the Latin America region, Canada and Asia are likely to expand at a solid clip, allowing South Florida to export products and services such as information technologies, tourism, real estate and healthcare services. Even Eurozone residents will continue to invest in Florida as they flee economic turmoil in the southern part of Europe.

??A third positive factor is what some economists term ?Helicopter Ben,? which is the propensity of Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and the Fed to continue injecting liquidity into the economy by purchasing Treasury bonds and mortgage-backed securities at record levels. The Fed is telling us that mortgage and other debt instruments? rates will remain historically low for the foreseeable future. This is the first time in my 30-plus year career as a business economist that the Fed is targeting a specific sector (real estate) and telegraphing to the public historically low-interest rates.

As a former Fed chairman used to say, ?The role of the Fed is to take the punchbowl away when the economic party gets too loud? Well, it does not look too loud for 2013, but watch out for the potential of a ?hangover? in future years as inflation starts and interest rates rise sharply.

In 2013, South Florida should perform better than the rest of the state?s regions, given its growing global links. Miami now enjoys a ?global brand? for entertainment, business, healthcare and the arts.

The principal risk for 2013 is U.S. fiscal policy. An ideologically divided Washington has the potential to derail a national economic recovery that has just started to take hold, and that is still repairing the social and economic damage created by the ?Great Recession.? Florida requires a growing U.S. economy to continue accelerating its economic recovery.

A new U.S. recession, caused by fiscal policy mistakes, would disrupt the nascent real estate recovery and hurt economic growth with key trade partners such as Canada, Brazil, Mexico and Colombia. Let us hope that a clearer fiscal policy path emerges in D.C. early into the New Year.

92 shorebirds killed by vehicle on Wash. beach

Darrell Gulin / Corbis file

A flock of dunlin stand on a Washington state beach in 1990.

By NBC News staff

Nearly 100 shorebirds were killed when a vehicle was driven into a flock on a beach in southwest Washington state, NBC station KING of Seattle reported.

Wildlife officers and sheriff's deputies who were called to the scene Thursday afternoon found 92 dunlin dead on Long Beach.?The Wildlife Center of the North Coast said the trauma was consistent with a collision with a motor vehicle, KING reported.

Seabirds and shorebirds are protected by law. Wildlife officers have shown that a vehicle must be traveling much faster than the posted 25-mph speed limit on the beach in order to hit these types of birds, KING said.

The dunlin is a type of sandpiper known for large flocks that exhibit swift, synchronized flights and can hit speeds up to 110 mph, ?according to the Audubon Society website.?

A $500 reward was offered by Wildlife Center of the North Coast for information leading to the person who hit the birds. Information can be reported to Sgt. Dan Chadwick of the state Fish and Wildlife police at 360-581-3337, KING said.?

Obama's Firm Fiscal Cliff Stance Had Pushed GOP In Corner, Jon Kyl Says

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) said on Sunday that the only reason some Republicans had been willing to raise tax rates on income above $250,000 was that President Barack Obama had been firm in his position. Now that Obama and other Democrats are showing more flexibility, offering to set the threshold for tax increases at at least $400,000, the political calculus has changed, Kyl told ABC's "This Week."

On "Fox News Sunday," Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said that he wouldn't support a $250,000 level because Democrats will agree to a higher threshold.

Kyl was read a comment by Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), a top Republican who said recently that he expected $250,000 to be the agreed-upon level. "I believe we're going to pass the $250,000 and below sooner or later, and we really don't have much leverage there because those rates go up by operation of law Dec. 31. I would focus on the areas where we do have more leverage," Cornyn said.

But Kyl said that's no longer the case. "I don't think you have so many Republicans -- and the context of it was what is realistic as a deal. And the context of it was the president's adamant position that he wouldn't compromise on anything above $250,000. Let's just get back to the theory," Kyl suggested, ticking off arguments about the harm done to small businesses by a tax hike.

Graham said he won't support a "fiscal cliff" package that raises rates on income between $250,000 and $400,000 or $500,000, because he knows Democrats will cave on a higher threshold. He used the example of his fellow Fox guest, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.).

"No," he said when asked if he'd support the $250,000 level, "because she's willing to go for more, and why would I not find 4 or 500, because I know the votes are there for 4 or 500? But in the House, will the votes be there for 4 or 500?"

Feinstein flinched and, when pressed, put the onus back on the president, who was the first to raise the compromise level to income over $400,000. "We believe that the 250 threshold is the appropriate threshold. The president did make an offer, we understand, of 400,000, with a trillion in cuts accompanying it. That was turned down by the House," she said. "The time has come really to measure the absence of a deal against a deal. ... We have to solve this immediate situation."

Asked whether she'd accept the higher level, Feinstein was quick to answer. "I could certainly live with it," she said.

Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), speaking on "This Week," said he thought a deal would come together after Jan. 3, when Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio) is safely reelected speaker. "I am hopeful in the new year, after Speaker Boehner is elected -- reelected -- and he doesn't have to worry about those 50 [members of the Tea Party faction], that he will start working in a way like the Senate works, which is Democrats and Republicans together," said Schumer.

Last week, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said on the Senate floor that Boehner appeared more worried about holding his speakership than reaching a deal.

One Pound Fish Music Video - Business Insider

A Pakistani fishmonger working in London is the world's latest viral-video sensation, with a Warner Music record deal, a hit song on iTunes, and 16 million views on YouTube.

Muhammad Shahid Nazir is so influential now in his home country that Pakistan has lifted a block on YouTube so citizens can celebrate their musical hero, the New York Times reports.

Nazir made up a song, "One Pound Fish," which he sang to bait customers for the Upton Park market stall where he sold fish. Colin Miller, a British Web designer, filmed him nine months ago. But the video didn't start going crazy until early December.

Now there's an "o-fish-al" music video and Nazir's returned to Pakistan, where he's being celebrated for his global Internet pop-culture victory.

He's far from touching the record set in 2012 by Korean pop artist Psy, whose "Gangnam Style" beat out longtime champion Justin Bieber for the most-watched video on YouTube with 1 billion views.

But it's more confirmation of the transformative power of YouTube to disseminate mass culture globally in the blink of an eye.

Also, it's completely bonkers.

Here's the original performance and the music video, which combined have more than 16 million views.

NYC homicides, shootings at modern record lows

Seth Wenig / AP

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, left, and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly speak to reporters after a Police Academy graduation ceremony Friday, Dec. 28, 2012, in New York.

By M. Alex Johnson, NBC News

Homicides and shootings in New York are at their lowest in a half-century, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Friday.

Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly credited stepped-up policing for the 19.6 percent drop in homicides (from 515 last year to 414 through Friday) and the 15.9 percent decline in overall shootings (from 1,608 last year to 1,353).

That's the fewest homicides since the city started keeping such statistics in 1963, and it's dramatically lower than the record high of 2,245 set in 1990.

The most recent FBI figures show that homicides have been falling in most major cities in recent years, but the drop in New York far outpaces the national average decline of 4 percent from 2010 to 2011, the last full year for which federal figures are available.

Kelly said officers had taken 8,000 weapons "out of the hands of people we stop, 800 of them illegal handguns," while Bloomberg singled out the city's participation in Operation Impact, a 2003 state initiative that pairs new police recruits with veteran officers in specific high-crime areas, as a particular success.

"The fact that the safest big city in America is safer than ever is a testament to the hard work and determination of the men and women who put their lives on the line for us every day ? and it also reflects our commitment to doing everything possible to stop gun violence," Bloomberg said in a statement.

Watch US News crime videos on NBCNews.com

Neither man specifically mentioned the city's controversial stop-and-frisk policy, which allows officers to search someone as he or she leaves a private building if they have a "reasonable suspicion" that the person is likely to commit a crime.

The policy is under legal challenge from civil liberties groups, which contend that police use it as a pretext to stop and search anyone without cause and contend in court documents that three-quarters of all New Yorkers searched under it are African-American or Latino. A trial is set for March.

Stocks open lower as US budget deadline nears

NEW YORK (AP) ? Stocks are falling again on Wall Street as Washington leaders blame each other for an impasse over the budget that seems less and less likely to be resolved before a year-end deadline.

That's when a series of across-the-board government spending cuts and tax increases kick in, an event that has become known as the "fiscal cliff."

The market is on track for its fifth consecutive decline as the political gridlock continues and investors fret about the fallout it will have on the fragile economic recovery in the U.S.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 71 points to 13,024 shortly after the opening of trading Friday.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell eight points to 1,409 and the Nasdaq composite fell 16 to 2,970.

Pending home sales hit two-and-half year high in November

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Contracts to buy previously owned U.S. homes rose in November to their highest level in 2-1/2 years, an industry group said on Friday, further evidence of a strengthening housing market recovery.

The National Association of Realtors said its Pending Home Sales Index, based on contracts signed last month, increased 1.7 percent to 106.4 - the highest level since April 2010 when the home-buyer tax credit expired.

Economists polled by Reuters had expected signed contracts, which become sales after a month or two, to rise 1.0 percent after a revised 5.0 percent increase in October. It was the third straight month of gains.

"Home sales are recovering now based solely on fundamental demand and favorable affordability conditions," said NAR chief economist Lawrence Yun.

Pending home sales were up 9.8 percent in the 12 months through November.

The housing market has turned the corner after a dramatic collapse, which dragged the economy through its worst recession since the Great Depression of the 1930s.

Home sales and prices are rising, encouraging builders to undertake new construction projects.

Home resale contracts were up in three of the country's four regions. They were unchanged in the South.

Children with chronic conditions increasingly use available resources in children's hospitals

Dec. 24, 2012 ? Children with chronic conditions increasingly used more resources in a group of children's hospitals compared with patients without a chronic condition, according to a report that analyzed data from 28 U.S. children's hospitals between 2004 and 2009, and is being published Online First by Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, a JAMA Network publication.

To compare inpatient resource use trends for healthy children and children with chronic health conditions of varying degrees of medical complexity, Jay G. Berry, M.D., M.P.H., with Children's Hospital Boston and Harvard Medical School, and colleagues, analyzed data from 1,526,051 unique patients hospitalized from January 2004 through December 2009, who were assigned to one of five chronic condition groups.

The authors found that between 2004 and 2009, hospitals experienced a greater increase in the number of children hospitalized with vs. without a chronic condition (19.2 percent vs. 13.7 percent) and the greatest cumulative increase (32.5 percent) was attributable to children with a significant chronic condition affecting two or more body systems. These children accounted for 19.2 percent (n=63,203) of patients, 27.2 percent (n=111,685) of hospital discharges, 48.9 percent (n=1.1 million) of hospital days, and 53.2 percent (n=$9.2 billion) of hospital charges in 2009.

"Children's hospitals must ensure that their inpatient care systems and payment structures are equipped to meet the protean needs of this important population of children," the authors conclude.

Editorial: What Can Be Learned by Residents Caring for Children with Lifelong, Chronic, Complex Conditions?

In an accompanying editorial, Julia A. McMillan, M.D., with Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Baltimore, writes, "if the data provided by Berry et al can be assumed to be representative of other large pediatric hospitals, there are important implications for pediatric resident education."

"The challenge for residency program directors is to ensure that the lessons learned caring for complex patients with lifelong chronic illness in the inpatient setting are not forgotten when residents see those patients during subspecialty clinic assignments or during their continuity clinic," they conclude.

Editorial: Implications of the Growing Use of Freestanding Children's Hospitals

In another accompanying editorial, Evan S. Fieldston, M.D., M.B.A., M.S., and Steven M. Altschuler, M.D., of The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, write, "Freestanding children's hospitals play a unique role in caring for children, particularly those with special needs? Therefore, the implications for the future of pediatric health care and its reimbursement are profound"

"Challenges will continue to be present in how to match patient needs and preferences and how to properly align payment for them. Given limited resources, the obligation of pediatric health care providers to society is to do our best to promote the best outcomes at the right level of efficiency and cost," they conclude.

'Les Mis?rables' features great acting as well as singing

'Les Mis?rables' stars Hugh Jackman in a piece of ideal casting.

'Les Mis?rables' stars Anne Hathaway (r.) and Hugh Jackman.

?Les Mis?rables? is a great big behemoth of a musical, but I rarely felt weighted down by it. It?s based on the Cameron Mackintosh production of Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Sch?nberg?s French stage musical ? one of those shows, like ?Cats? and ?The Phantom of the Opera,? that always seems to running somewhere in the world. It passed me by, though. I come to the movie fresh.

Or at least partially so. The great big behemoth of a source novel by Victor Hugo has been filmed numerous times; its narrative has been recycled endlessly (most memorably in ?The Fugitive? TV series and, less memorably, the movie).

Hugh Jackman plays Jean Valjean, imprisoned for 20 years for stealing a loaf of bread in early 19th century France. Released by the cruel martinet Javert (Russell Crowe), he violates his parole, but manages to become an upstanding citizen (while hiding his past). Javert eventually comes to hound him once again, which provides the through-line for a plot that encompasses a starving, unwed mother (Anne Hathaway) and her young daughter (played as an adult by Amanda Seyfried); the daughter?s cruel guardians (Sasha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter); a revolutionary leader of the 1832 Paris student uprisings (Eddie Redmayne) and his unrequited love (Samantha Barks); and enough squalor and grotesquerie to fill out a dozen other movies.

Tom Hooper, who directed ?The King?s Speech,? is not great with action and big set pieces, but he gets the job done. What makes ?Les Mis?rables? work are the up-close moments when he can focus on performance and song. (In a welcome switch from the usual practice, the singing was recorded live on the set.)

Hathaway?s big number, ?I Dreamed a Dream,? filmed in a single take, is shockingly expressive (and not just because she?s shorn of hair and hollow-cheeked). It?s the best piece of acting she?s ever done. Jackman, ideal casting here, has a couple of showstoppers, such as ?What Have I Done?,? as do Barks (?On My Own?) and the marvelous Redmayne (?Empty Chairs at Empty Tables?). It?s great to watch a musical in which the acting is on the same high level as the singing. (Okay, Crowe is no Ezio Pinza, but he?ll do.) Usually you have to put up with ho-hum performances in order to savor the song-and-dance goodies. Grade: B+ (Rated PG-13 for suggestive and sexual material, violence and thematic elements.)

Travelers rights and travel insurance can help you in the event of a trip cancellation. In our year-end editorial meeting, my boss/executive editor commented about the amount of writing I've done about the various trip delays I've had this year. "People are going to start to think you're the unluckiest traveler in the world," she told me. And looking back at all my travels in 2012, I'm starting to agree with her. Out of all the flights I took, I was forced into a trip delay on at least four of them - and outright missed my connections twice. Based on those numbers, I might be pretty unlucky this year. But in the same stroke, I've also been pretty lucky in the fact that I've turned a lot of those delays into bonus points and credits.?

?Non-frequent travelers may not know that there are several laws out there to protect you and help get you to your destination - all depending on where you're going to or from, or how you're getting there.?As a result of all of my travels, delays, and cancellations this year, I've made myself learn about what rights are available to me. It also helps that, as a result of all the hurricanes and winter storms this year, the media has done a better job of bringing attention to flyer's rights.

So what can you do if you're behind a trip delay or a trip cancellation? Traveler advocate FlyersRights.org offers the following tips:?

  • Know when you can and can't get off the airplane
Once the doors to the airplane are closed, you're stuck on the plane, right? Yes and no. Once the doors are closed, you are under the control of the airline and are obligated to follow the directions of the pilot and flight crew. But if the flight is delayed for three hours or more, the airplane must return to the gate and allow passengers to deplane - unless doing so would disrupt regular airport operations, or create a security problem.
  • Know when you can and can't get information
If your going to have a trip delay on your flight, your airline is obligated to give information about the delay every 30 minutes after the scheduled take off, and continue to do so until your flight is departed.
?This allows you to be in control and understand the situation at hand, and allow you to make reasonable accomodations to get where you're going. If you're not getting this information on a regular basis, its okay to ask - just be polite when you do so, and understand that the gate agents are possibly just as stressed as you are.?
  • Know when you can ask to take another flight
Before airline deregulation in 1978, all airlines operating in the United States had to comply with FAA Rule 240. What was Rule 240? ?If a flight went under a trip delay or trip cancellation, the airline you flew was obligated to transfer passengers to another carrier if that other carrier could get you to your destination faster. Since airline deregulation, this rule has become obsolete - however, under the conditions of carriage that every airline files with the FAA, many airlines still have a variation of this rule. If you're worried that you may be under a trip delay, check with your airline to see their version of this rule, and under what options you can elect to exercise that right.?

As I've written before, considering travel insurance is not a bad investment in this situation. To learn more about what travel insurance may cover during a winter storm, click here.?

By knowing your rights when flying, you can better prepare yourself to ride out a trip delay or trip cancellation. Preparation is always the best thing to pack when taking a major trip - and knowing these tips could be just as important as packing your lucky sweater.

Has knowing your rights helped you in the midst of a trip delay? I'd like to know about it - leave me a comment below with how you negotiate your way through a trip delay.?

Scientists sequence genome of pathogen responsible for pneumocystis pneumonia

Dec. 26, 2012 ? Scientists have sequenced the genome of the fungus Pneumocystis jirovecii, an advancement that could help identify new targets for drugs to treat and prevent Pneumocystis pneumonia, a common and often deadly infection in immunocompromised patients. The study will be published on December 26, 2012 in mBio?, the online open-access journal of the American Society for Microbiology. The organism cannot yet be isolated and grown for study in the laboratory, so details about Pneumocystis pneumonia, the biology of P. jirovecii, and its pathogenicity are hard to come by. The genome sequence represents a wealth of new information for doctors and researchers tackling this disease.

Pneumocystis pneumonia is an opportunistic infection that strikes most often in individuals with diminished immune systems. The corresponding author of the study in mBio?, Philippe Hauser of the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vaudois and University of Lausanne, in Switzerland, says the disease gained importance in the 1980s.

"Recognized first among malnourished infants, P. jirovecii pneumonia became a public issue with the advent of the HIV epidemic," says Hauser. Today, the disease most commonly affects HIV-infected persons who are unaware of their status as well as solid organ transplant recipients and patients with hemato-oncologic or autoimmune diseases. Since the organism cannot be grown in the lab for study, researchers have long made do with studying P. jirovecii's lab-friendly relatives, species that infect animals and plants, in order to explore the secrets of the human disease.

"It is obviously better to study [P. jirovecii's] genes rather that those of Pneumocystis species from animal models. The genome has both medical and evolutionary interests for the scientific community," says Hauser.

Under normal circumstances, scientists sequencing the genome of a microorganism simply extract DNA from thick cultures of cells they grow in the lab. Since they were unable to grow P. jirovecii cells for their genomic DNA, Hauser and his colleagues took a different approach. They took a sample of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid from an individual infected with Pneumocystis pneumonia, then concentrated the P. jirovecii cells using immuno-precipitation and created copies of the DNA in the sample using a technique called random DNA amplification. This mixture of DNA strands, from P. jirovecii, human, and other microbes from the lungs of the infected patient, was then sequenced using high throughput technologies.

According to Hauser and his colleagues, the fact that the sequence data represented DNA from many different species created the biggest challenge they faced. "The major challenge of the study was the in silico sorting of the reads out of a mixture representing the human host and different organisms present in the lung microbiome," he says. This challenge was met through a collaboration with Marco Pagni of the Vital-IT group of the SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics, who provided indispensable expertise and infrastructure.

Once the sorting task was accomplished, the researchers assembled the sequences into a genome and attempted to identify the functions of P. jirovecii's genes. This is the first time scientists have assembled the genome of a fungus from a mixed pool of DNA from a single source, often called a metagenome. Their analyses reveal a surprising fact: P. jirovecii is a parasite that must live within the human body to survive.

P. jirovecii lacks the genes necessary for creating some of the essential ingredients of life, a hallmark of obligate parasites, organisms that must rely on another creature for sustenance. "It implies that they need their host to provide these molecules. Thus, this has been quite an important finding which implied that human beings represent the reservoir of this pathogen," says Hauser. This is useful information, since it means that people are the only significant source of the organism and that both infected people and healthy carriers represent the only control points for limiting the spread of the disease.

The genome also shows that P. jirovecii apparently lacks the ability to make toxins and virulence factors, molecules that enable a microbe to invade and take advantage of its host. This makes sense, since P. jirovecii does not cause disease in healthy people, but only runs out of control when it is not confronted with an immune response.

In the study of infectious disease, access to the genome of a pathogen provides new information that can be pivotal in combating the diseases is causes. The hope is that the genome of P. jirovecii will lead to new advances in therapies for those suffering from Pneumocystis pneumonia. The current drugs of choice for treating Pneumocystis pneumonia are antifolates, but certain isolates of P. jirovecii have already developed resistance to antifolates, an ability that is very likely to spread. Now that the genome of P. jirovecii is assembled and available to researchers all over the world, scientists can tease out clues about the organism that will help identify targets for some badly needed new drugs.

Good Winter Travel Season Deals Still Available | Gadling.com

Before, during or after winter travel season, the nation's regions offering ski adventure travel options have something for everyone. The idea of climbing, hiking, camping or trekking through diverse areas had many travelers planning a 2013 winter vacation about this time last year. But those with no plans have options too.

"Put in now for end-of-January trips, but don't expect deals around Presidents' Day weekend," says travel expert Pauline Frommer in a Reuters article.

President's Day, like many other holidays, is a popular time for leisure travel and a peak booking of snow and cold-related adventures. The best hotel and resort rooms and money-saving packages, offered far in advance to jump-start bookings, are gone. Other discounted promotions will be few but some suggested sources can help.

"Check ski package deals from Southwest Airlines and Alaska Airlines," says Frommer. "They both offer good lift ticket and lodging deals - especially if you're willing to go mid-week instead of weekend."

Looking to go away from the snow and cold? Land-based resorts, some all-inclusive, are a possible choice along with cruise vacations where unpacking once, we see several destinations on our floating hotel. The winter season brings cruise ships from Europe and around the world to luxuriate in the Caribbean sun. Still, the Caribbean is not the only warm place open for business over the next few months.

"I've found some of the best values to be in Central America," suggests Frommer. "There are fairly decent air fares there. They've risen less than other parts of the world. Guatemala and Belize have some good hotel deals and there are some great adventures to be had there."

Want to find specific ski adventure locations? This video may help:

needn barrister: culbertson aborigine: Speed reading apps for

I installed some speed reading apps and tested them. I?ve so far notices a few ?categories? or groups of equals:

  • One kind exists mostly from showing a text word by word in the middle of the screen. Showing each word a very short time and so you can read at a high wpm because you never need to move your eyes.
  • Another kind is merely a speed reading article disguised as app.
  • Another kind is no speed reading app but just a reading app with a fancy name.
  • Yet another kind is training in the form of news/actually.
  • And the last kind is a training app, not for your own stuff but purely for training.

I only tested them quickly and unions talked the non-interesting. But they aren?t quite what I?m looking for. Maybe I should write one myself for training and guided reading.

The US Is Helping Iraq Beef Up Its Navy And ... - Business Insider

The United States has delivered two support ships to Iraq, which is seeking to boost its fledgling naval capabilities, the US embassy said on Sunday.

The two 60-metre offshore support vessels were delivered by the US navy on December 20, the embassy said.

The vessels are "large, multi-purpose, multi-functional ships capable of providing a wide range of support to Iraqi naval operations," it said.

They will also offer support to Iraq's patrol and fast attack boats at sea, offshore oil platforms and help move security personnel, the embassy added.

The US military completed its withdrawal from Iraq on December 18 last year.

Less than 200 US military personnel remain in Iraq under US embassy authority, assisting with the delivery of military equipment, and training local personnel.

Washington is Iraq's main arms supplier as Baghdad seeks to boost its overall military capabilities.

Anne's Food: Broccoli & avocado salad

Untitled

I hope you're not sick of christmas food, because I still haven't managed to transfer the photos from my camera of some new dishes I've made recently. But I will, I promise. Meanwhile, have some salad! This is a pretty hearty thing, that we ate with steaks and some roasted potatoes. It's absolutely delicious, and would be a good stand-alone dish as well.

Broccoli & avocado salad
serves 2-4 depending on what else you serve

1/2 red onion
1 lemon
Salt
1 head of broccoli

2 tbsp sour cream
1 tbsp olive oil

1/2 red pepper, diced
10 cherry tomatoes, quartered
Handful basil, finely sliced
Handful cashews
1-2 avocados, diced
50 g feta cheese, crumbled

First, finely chop the red onion, and mix with the squeezed-out lemon in a bowl. Season with a pinch of salt, too.

Next, separate the broccoli into small florets. Peel the stalk and discard the tough outsides, but slice the rest. Cook for three minutes, then plunge into cold water to stop the cooking.

Add the sour cream and olive oil to the lemon dressing, and mix well.

And then - assemble. Just mix everything together, but make sure to don't break up the avocado too much. Use a light hand!

FBI: 1 of 2 escaped Chicago inmates arrested

CHICAGO (AP) ? One of two bank robbers was arrested late Thursday after a manhunt following the pair's daring escape from a high-rise federal jail in Chicago, the FBI said.

FBI spokeswoman Joan Hyde said Joseph "Jose" Banks was captured without incident in Chicago. Agents and officers from the Chicago FBI's Violent Crimes Task Force, along with officers from the Chicago Police Department, arrested Banks about 11:30 p.m. Thursday, Hyde said in a news release.

The search continued early Friday for Kenneth Conley, who fled the jail with Banks early Tuesday.

Banks, 37, and Conley, 38, somehow broke a large hole into the bottom of a 6-inch wide window of the Metropolitan Correctional Center, dropped a makeshift rope made of bed sheets out and climbed down about 20 stories to the ground.

The escape went unnoticed for hours, with surveillance video from a nearby street showing the two hop into a cab shortly before 3 a.m. Tuesday. They were no longer wearing their orange jail-issued jumpsuits.

When the facility did discover the two men were gone around 7 a.m., what was found revealed a meticulously planned escape, including clothing and sheets shaped to resemble a body under blankets on beds, bars inside a mattress and even fake bars in the cells.

A massive manhunt involving state, federal and local law enforcement agencies was launched, as SWAT teams stormed into the home of a relative of Conley, only to learn the two had been there but had left, and searched other area homes and businesses ? including a strip club where Conley once worked.

Law enforcement officials did not answer a host of questions, including how the men could collect about 200 feet of bed sheets, and what they might have used to break through the wall of the federal facility.

Banks, known as the Second-Hand Bandit because he wore used clothes during his heists, was convicted last week of robbing two banks and attempting to rob two others. Authorities say he stole almost $600,000, and most of that still is missing.

During trial, he had to be restrained because he threatened to walk out of the courtroom. He acted as his own attorney and verbally sparred with the prosecutor, at times arguing that U.S. law didn't apply to him because he was a sovereign citizen of a group that was above state and federal law.

Conley pleaded guilty last October to robbing a Homewood Bank last year of nearly $4,000. Conley, who worked at the time at a suburban strip club, wore a coat and tie when he robbed the bank and had a gun stuffed in his waistband.
