1991 Ford Explorer XL from North America

I bought the car with 220,000 miles on it for $1500. Everyone thought I was crazy for buying a ford with high miles. Fortunately, it was a stick, and didn't have the transmission problems a lot of fords have.

The one big thing that went out on the car was the engine. I can't blame it on ford, because I ran the truck without antifreeze in it. I was driving a long ways from anywhere on some old logging trails, when my radiator blew. I had no way out other than to drive or to walk, so I drove it out without fluid and melted 2 of the piston heads. I later found out the reason the radiator blew was because the thermostat and pressure cap had rusted shut, due to the ancient antifreeze in the radiator. Since then I have been more cautious in keeping my radiator flushed. Still, I spent $2000 to have a used engine with 85,000 miles put in, along with a new clutch and radiator. Since then I have had few if any problems. The truck just keeps going. It isn't that powerful, and it won't go much over 50 up steep hills, but all around it does pretty well. I get about 18 miles per gallon around the city, and I have the versatility of a 4X4.

All in all, I've spent about $4000 dollars in the initial purchase and subsequent repairs for a car that has lasted me for more than five years, and yes, it still runs great. I am looking for a new SUV for my wife and kids, as they have outgrown our other car. It scares me to read everyones horror stories. Perhaps I'll look for another old ford with a stick shift.

Israel to Channel Hundreds of Millions NIS to the PA

(Wednesday, January 30th, 2013)

Acting to mounting American and European Union pressure, Israel is going to transfer hundreds of millions NIS to the PA (Palestinian Authority). The tax revenue funds were held up after PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) defied Israel and applied for UN General Assembly observer nation status.

The unilateral PA move also led to Israel?s declaration to move ahead with construction plans for the E1 area between Jerusalem and Maale Adumim.

PA officials insist the tax revenue funds are the PA?s and Israel?s unacceptable actions have placed a stranglehold on the PA, with Abu Mazen taking his case to the international community to apply pressure on Israel, which seems to have worked.

(AP) ? Japanese video game maker Nintendo Co. returned to the black for the first nine months of its business year and more than doubled its profit forecast for the full year, getting a perk from a weaker yen, despite pessimism about sales prospects.

April-December profit for the Kyoto-based maker of Super Mario and Pokemon games totaled 14.55 billion yen ($160 million), bouncing back from the 48.35 billion yen loss reported a year earlier, it said Wednesday. Nine-month sales inched up 2.4 percent to 543 billion yen ($6 billion).

Nintendo raised its profit forecast for the business year through March 2013 to 14 billion yen ($154 million) from 6 billion yen ($66 million). The dollar has strengthened about 14 percent against the yen in the past three months on expectations a new government would relax monetary policy to boost Japan's moribund economy.

But Nintendo, which didn't break down quarterly results, isn't upbeat about its sales prospects and lowered its full year sales forecast to 670 billion yen ($7.4 billion) from 810 billion yen ($8.9 billion).

Game machines have taken a beating from the proliferation of smartphones and tablets that also offer games and other entertainment, competing for people's leisure time. Some analysts say the global market for game machines is saturated with offerings from Nintendo, Microsoft Corp., Sony Corp. and others.

Nintendo spokesman Makoto Wakae said sales had gone relatively well during the key holiday shopping season late last year, but that was quickly running out of momentum. The company expects to post an operating loss for the year ending March 2013, the second straight year of operating losses, he said.

The company forecasts it will sell 4 million Wii U consoles for the fiscal year, down from its earlier estimate of 5.5 million units. The Wii U, which went on sale late last year, was the first major new game console to arrive in stores in years.

Nintendo, also behind the Donkey Kong and Zelda games, lowered its full year sales forecast for Wii U game software units to 16 million from 24 million.

Nintendo's success was rooted in its appeal to so-called casual gamers, but they may be the kind of people for whom smartphones and iPads are proving attractive alternatives.

What's coming as a godsend for Nintendo is the weakening yen, against both the dollar and the euro, as that helps raise the value of its overseas earnings. Currency gains for the period totaled 22 billion yen ($242 million), according to Nintendo.

Nintendo has a lot riding on the Wii U, which has a touch-screen tablet controller called GamePad and a TV-watching feature called TVii. Nintendo said it sold 3 million Wii U machines so far around the world.

Nintendo sank into a loss the previous fiscal year largely because of price cuts for its hand-held 3DS game machine, which shows three-dimensional imagery without special glasses. It has sold nearly 30 million 3DS machines so far.

Exclusive: Researchers warn of widespread networking gear bugs

BOSTON (Reuters) - Bugs in widely used networking technology expose tens of millions of personal computers, printers and storage drives to attack by hackers over the regular Internet, researchers with a security software maker said.

The problem lies in computer routers and other networking equipment that use a commonly employed standard known as Universal Plug and Play or UPnP. UPnP makes it easy for networks to identify and communicate with equipment, reducing the amount of work it takes to set up networks.

Security software maker Rapid7 said in a white paper to be released Tuesday that it discovered between 40 million and 50 million devices that were vulnerable to attack due to three separate sets of problems that the firm's researchers have identified with the UPnP standard.

The long list of devices includes products from manufacturers including Belkin, D-Link, Cisco Systems Inc's Linksys division and Netgear.

Representatives for Belkin, D-Link, Linksys and Netgear could not be reached for comment on Monday evening.

Chris Wysopal, chief technology officer of security software firm Veracode, said he believed that publication of Rapid7's findings would draw widespread attention to the still emerging area of UPnP security, prompting other security researchers to search for more bugs in UPnP.

"This definitely falls into the scary category," said Wysopal, who reviewed Rapid7's findings ahead of their publication. "There is going to be a lot more research on this. And the follow-on research could be a lot scarier."

Rapid7 has privately alerted electronics makers about the problem through the CERT Coordination Center, a group at the Carnegie Mellon Software Engineering Institute that helps researchers report vulnerabilities to affected companies.

"This is the most pervasive bug I've ever seen," said HD Moore, chief technology officer for Rapid7. He discussed the research with Reuters late on Monday.

Moore, who created a widely used platform known as Metasploit that allows security experts to simulate network attacks, said that he expected CERT to release a public warning about the flaw on Tuesday. A spokesman for the CERT Coordination Center declined to comment.

A source with a networking equipment maker confirmed they had been alerted that CERT would issue an advisory on Tuesday and that companies were preparing to respond.

TAKING CONTROL

The flaws could allow hackers to access confidential files, steal passwords, take full control over PCs as well as remotely access devices such as webcams, printers and security systems, according to Rapid7.

Moore said that there were bugs in most of the devices he tested and that device manufacturers will need to release software updates to remedy the problems.

He said that is unlikely to happen quickly.

In the meantime, he advised computer users to quickly use a free tool released by Rapid7 to identify vulnerable gear, then disable the UPnP functionality in that equipment.

Moore said hackers have not widely exploited the UPnP vulnerabilities to launch attacks, but both Moore and Wysopal expected they may start to do so after the findings are publicized.

Still, Moore said he decided to disclose the flaws in a bid to pressure equipment makers to fix the bugs and generally pay more attention to security.

People who own devices with UPnP enabled may not be aware of it because new routers, printers, media servers, Web cameras, storage drives and "smart" or Web-connected TVs are often shipped with that functionality turned on by default.

"You can't stay silent about something like this," he said. "These devices seem to have had the same level of core security for decades. Nobody seems to really care about them."

Veracode's Wysopal said that some hackers have likely already exploited the flaws to launch attacks, but in relatively small numbers, choosing victims one at a time.

"If they are going after executives and government officials, then they will probably look for their home networks and exploit this vulnerability," he said.

Rapid7 is advising businesses and consumers alike to disable UPnP in devices that they suspect may be vulnerable to attack. The firm has released a tool to help identify those devices on its website http://www.rapid7.com.

Longtime Tokyo-based Star and Stripes reporter Hal Drake dies in Australia at age 83

CANBERRA, Australia - Harold A. Drake, whose diverse reporting career included the Vietnam War and interviews with global entertainers for Pacific Stars and Stripes, has died in Australia. He was 83 and had cancer.

His widow Kaz Drake said Wednesday she was by her husband's side when he died peacefully on Sunday in Gold Coast Hospital.

For almost 40 years, Hal Drake reported a range of Asian stories from his Tokyo base until his retirement in 1995.

"Stars and Stripes has lost a true legend," former colleague Gerry Galipault told the U.S. military newspaper.

"He managed to find the human element in everything he wrote," former Pacific Stars and Stripes news editor Ron Rhodes told the newspaper. "And he was always a gentleman in the process."

Drake spoke of the dangers he faced covering the Vietnam War. He returned in 1985 to cover the 10th anniversary of the war's end and flew to the Philippines in 1973 to greet returning prisoners of war released by the Vietnamese.

His interview subjects included Roman Catholic nun Mother Teresa, rock star Rod Stewart and Hollywood legend Elizabeth Taylor.

Drake retired with his wife to the tourist resort city of Gold Coast in Queensland state. He is also survived by two sons who live in California.

Born in Santa Monica, Calif., Drake said he was unhappy to be drafted into the army in 1951 to fight in the Korean War.

He said in a video interview late in life that he became fascinated with Japan while on leave there during his war service.

"There was just something about Japan I had to see again," he said.

He returned to the States after the war and was working at the Los Angeles Mirror newspaper in 1956 when he saw a Tokyo-based job advertised with Stars and Stripes. He joined the staff that year.

He described the Far East as "my side of the world."

New study will predict how trees will adapt to rapid climate change

Since the climate began warming at the end of the last Ice Age, trees have had thousands of years to adapt to a warmer climate. But how will forests adapt to the rapid pace of current climate change? The National Science Foundation has awarded a $1.5 million grant to Drs. Stephen Keller, Andrew Elmore, Matthew Fitzpatrick, David Nelson, and Cathlyn Stylinski from the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science's Appalachian Laboratory to study climate adaptation in forest trees and predict the areas where trees are most and least adapted to changing climates in the future.

"We're in a period of warming that is rapid relative to what species have experienced in the past," said lead researcher Stephen Keller. "Trees may not have the time required to develop new genetic mutations that could help them gradually adapt to the changing climate. Whether tree populations will persist in an area or not has a lot to do with whether the right genetic variations for adaptation to future climates are already present, and where they occur across the landscape."

The study will focus on balsam poplar, an important species in North America's northern forests, where climate change is expected to be especially strong. By sequencing the DNA of hundreds of trees, the researchers will identify genes that are responsible for traits that could ensure survival as the climate changes, especially as spring occurs earlier and summer becomes warmer. This genetic information will be combined with high-resolution satellite maps of the forest's growing season and spatial modeling techniques to identify and map populations of forest trees that are adapted for growth under different climate conditions.

The researchers will pinpoint areas where the trees will face the most significant risk to provide insight into the health of the forests and their ability to grow in the face of a changing environment. This knowledge will allow them to predict regions that could experience forest loss and prioritize those areas for conservation of genetic resources.

"What really sets our study apart is the strength of our collaborative team," said Keller. "By combining genomics, remote sensing, plant physiology, and spatial modeling, we'll be generating a comprehensive view of how climate change will affect the forests of tomorrow. There are even opportunities for the public to get involved in the study."

In coordination with the USA National Phenology Network, the research team will engage citizens to help monitor seasonal changes in poplar and aspen growth, such as spring leaf emergence. Citizens interested in getting involved are encouraged to send an email to citizen.science@al.umces.edu.

Scientists at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science's Appalachian Laboratory in Frostburg actively study the effects of land-use change on terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems and how human activity may influence their health and sustainability on local, regional and global scales. The scientific results help to unravel the consequences of environmental change, manage natural resources, restore ecosystems, and foster ecological literacy.

Tips for Choosing a Title to Successfully Blog a Book

The title you choose when blogging a book plays a big role in your book?s success.

Writing a book as a series of blog posts is the most efficient way to get published. Blogging a book makes it easy to market and promote your book while you?re writing it.

More important, blogging a book provides breaks a big, easily put-off, task with a distant deadline into a series of short, attainable tasks with weekly deadlines.

The result? You?re you?re more likely to finish your book on time!

Choose book titles that create a structure

Look for a book title that provides a structure for writing your book as a series of short, self-contained chapters.

Today?s readers are in a hurry. They appreciate numerous short, focused, self-contained chapters containing practical advice that can be read in 5 or 10 minute increments before going to sleep, while commuting, or between appointments.

Looks for topics you can address in 2 to 6 page chapters; these make the best candidates for blogging a book.

Scott Parker?s (no relation) Web Designer?s 101 Most Important Decisions: Professional Secrets for a Winning Website provides an excellent example of a book topic you can write as a series of blog posts.

  • Each page addresses a single topic. This focuses your reader?s attention on a single idea or principle, its relevance, and how to apply the information.
  • Limited space leads to better writing. When writing to a one-page-per-chapter format, you tend to write better because you don?t have to ?fill up a lot of space.? As a result, it?s easier to get started. In addition, the limited space encourages you to edit your ideas to the bone, in order to make everything fit.
  • Selective graphics. Books like The Web Designer?s 101 Most Important Decisions also tend to be visually interesting because the limited space available for graphics forces authors to be selective in the visuals they add to reinforce the text. The results, however, can be strikingly, as you?ll see from the book?s Amazon.com Look Inside! Feature.

Tips for successful book titles

Traditionally, the best nonfiction book titles have been described in terms of:

  • Descriptive
  • Benefit-oriented
  • Specific
  • Targeted
  • Concise
  • Positioned
  • Alliterative

Now, at a time when books often first appear as a series of blog posts, it?s equally important that book titles create an obvious framework for writing the book, based on Ideas, Rules, Questions, Recommendations, Tips, and Things that other title ideas I?ve described in previous blog posts in this series.

AlaskaDispatch.com: Alaska Scientists Discover Remains of 40,000-Year-Old Extinct Bison

As she scraped cold dirt from the remains of an extinct bison, Pam Groves wrinkled her nose at a rotten-egg smell wafting from gristle that still clung to the animal's bones. She lifted her head to scan the horizon, wary of bears that might be attracted to the flesh of a creature that gasped its last breath 40,000 years ago.

In the type of discovery they have dreamed about for years, Groves and Dan Mann, both researchers at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in summer 2012 found in the thawing bank of a northern river almost the entire skeleton of a steppe bison that died during the last ice age.

In adventurous work sponsored by the Bureau of Land Management, Mann and Groves have been boating down lonely northern rivers for 15 years looking for scattered bones of ice age mammals, always hoping to find a complete skeleton or mummy of a mammoth, horse, or American lion. In mid-June, on a familiar stretch of river that flows northward on Alaska's North Slope, they rounded a river bend and saw the skull of a large bison trapped against a willow shrub.

Groves described the scene: "We were paddling downriver, battling through a nasty squall of hail and wind, thinking about our camping spot about a mile downriver," she said. "When the hail was just breaking up, we saw the upside-down skull with the lower jaw still attached. The teeth were really white. They stood out."

The pair landed their inflatable canoe at the base of the 60-foot bluff. Even before they stepped out in their rubber boots, Groves spotted other bones that told her this wasn't an ordinary site. Though this ever-changing wall had yielded many bones over the years, those were scattered remains of ice-age creatures separated by meandering river action and the crumbling and re-forming of permafrost-cemented bluffs. Mann said their typical discoveries resemble "Pleistocene in a blender." ...

Blueprints For Special Needs Families ? January 28, 2013 ...

Facebook?s Timelines And Your Special Needs Planning

Rob Wrubel CFP?, AIF?

Facebook has a feature called Timeline. It shows your posting and interaction history of your life on Facebook starting from now and working backward. It is a rear-view mirror of your life as lived on the social media site.

Blueprints ? our financial planning process for families with special needs ? is oriented towards the future ? towards thinking about and making the type of life do you want to see, live and enjoy. Unlike Facebook postings, there are no pictures or funny image or stories to tell yet. There are hopes, dreams and ambitions, stress and worries, possibilities and opportunities. The stories will be written after they are lived and enjoyed.

It is up to us to make these possibilities come out the way we hope and dream. Of course, we cannot control the outcomes or ensure that they happen. We can move ourselves, our families and our behaviors in the right direction to plan and work towards the best outcomes for our families.

One step to take is to map out parts of the future with a timeline. Generally speaking, we know when certain life events will take place. Some of the timeline pieces may have passed for your family so just skip them. Add others that fit your family.

Take out a piece of paper and pencil to get started with key ages or desired life events for your family.

  1. First day of kindergarten
  2. First day of middle school/high school
  3. Age 18 of special needs person
  4. Transition programs
  5. Age 21
  6. Independent living
  7. Expected future education needs
  8. Expected future medical issues ? if any
  9. Purchase of a second home
  10. Start a business
  11. Retirement
  12. Death of one or both parents

Certain events are crucial to helping make the right outcomes take place for your family.

Age 18 is the age when some governmental benefits, such as Supplemental Security Income, can first be used. The cash received can make a big difference for your family even as your special needs family member lives at home.

Age 18 is also the time when most families apply for guardianship if it will be necessary. Guardianship allows for a family member to be the responsible party for medical decisions, living arrangements, social settings, asset protection and for other times where important decisions must be made. Many people with special needs act as their own guardians. The choice of who should be guardian, person with special needs, Mom, Dad or someone else may be a difficult decision for your family. You will want to spend time in advance of the 18th birthday talking with other people and professionals to determine the need for guardianship and who should fill that role.

Age 21 is the time when transition services through school districts end. Transition programs allow for your family member with special needs to stay in supported programs offered by the school district. These programs are geared towards encouraging independence and may involve working, life training, social and day programs or volunteering. Unfortunately, the time after age 21 means a loss of programs, involvement and opportunities for many people with special needs. Colorado, for instance, has a long waiting list estimated at 14 years for people to be served by comprehensive benefits that open the door to government funded programs. How do you plan to cover the gap in activity and funding from age 21 to the point where benefits are available?

The timelines of special needs planning are geared towards understanding key moments and preparing for them. You will need to be ready financially, emotionally and intellectually. Events on the timeline require forethought and preparation. Take the step of independent living for example. At what age will you aim to have your special needs family live some place other than your home? Will it be in a host home, group home or truly independent? Who will provide supports? You will likely need to research which supported living and supported working non-profits in your community have the best reputations and can provide care in a way that is meaningful and sustainable for your family.

The timeline is one step in the special needs planning process. It is used to get you thinking about important future needs and goals for your family member with special needs. It helps take all those thoughts zooming around and get them down in an organized way. Financial planning, saving and investing cannot be done well without knowing what you wish to have happen. Once those goals are written down, the process of funding them can start.

Facebook?s timeline is fun ? a time to look at your life or a friend?s life and see where they have been and what they have been thinking. Have fun with your Blueprint?s timeline and enjoy thinking about the future you wish to have.

Obama: Gun-control advocates have to listen more

(AP) ? President Barack Obama says gun-control advocates have to do a little more listening than they do sometimes in the debate over firearms in America.

In an interview with The New Republic, Obama says he has "a profound respect" for the tradition of hunting that dates back for generations.

"And I think those who dismiss that out of hand make a big mistake. Part of being able to move this forward is understanding the reality of guns in urban areas are very different from the realities of guns in rural areas," he says.

Obama has called for a ban on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines and is pushing other policies following the mass shooting last month at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn. In response, gun-rights advocates have accused Obama and others of ignoring the Second Amendment rights of Americans.

The president says it's understandable that people are protective of their family traditions when it comes to hunting.

"So it's trying to bridge those gaps that I think is going to be part of the biggest task over the next several months. And that means that advocates of gun control have to do a little more listening than they do sometimes," he says.

Has Obama himself ever fired a gun?

"Yes," the president says, "in fact, up at Camp David, we do skeet shooting all the time."

His daughters don't shoot skeet at the presidential retreat in Maryland, he adds, "but oftentimes guests of mine go up there."

The interview appears in the Feb. 11 issue of The New Republic.

Alloa V Stranraer At Recreation Park : Match Preview - Sport

Alloa V Stranraer - view commentary, squad, and statistics of the game live.

Hartley waits on Marr

Alloa manager Paul Hartley will give defender Jason Marr (back) as long as possible to prove his fitness before confirming his side to face Stranraer.

Definitely missing for the Wasps as they look for revenge after a 3-2 defeat at Stair Park last month is full-back Michael Doyle, who had surgery on a groin problem recently.

Hartley said: "It would be good to make up for that result, but fair play to Stranraer as they have done well since they brought in Stephen Aitken as manager.

"They gave us a really tough afternoon but we missed chances at crucial times.

"We will look to get the win and a bit of revenge at our place where we have been strong all season."

Stranraer will be without striker Michael Moore as he has sustained a hamstring injury.

The Blues will also be missing former Dunfermline midfielder Nicky Phinn who parted company with them earlier this week at the end of his short-term deal.

Manager Stephen Aitken said: "Alloa are a very strong side, especially at home, but we will go there with the confidence of knowing that we can beat them as we showed in the last game.

"With two wins and a draw in our last four away games we have given ourselves a chance of pulling away from the foot of the table, but it will take a really good performance to pick up a win at Alloa."

Team Building Made Fun - M3 Group

Posted January 25, 2013, by Kyle

When is the last time you went bowling with your coworkers? Or played a round of Apples to Apples together??

These may not seem like the most productive things to do during a work day, but the truth is they are a very important part of being successful, because both are great team building exercises that improve teamwork.

Teamwork is an essential part of a company and necessary for work to be accomplished quickly and efficiently. It keeps stress to a minimum in the workplace if everybody is on the same page and working together.

Team building can be a fun way to improve on trust and working more efficiently together. There?s nothing more frustrating than a team that doesn?t work well together.

The type of team building that should be done is dependent on the company. For M3 Group, creative activities tend to be best, because of the creative nature of branding. We might play some Pictionary or do some sort exercise involving creativity and teamwork.

A good team building exercise should draw on the strengths of everyone in the team or teams. Sometimes a good team building activity is something fun that brings the whole team together like bowling or Apples to Apples.

If you need help with making your team stronger, reach out to M3 Group. We have plenty of ideas to strengthen your team, thanks to our new Training and Professional Development department, that can get your crew working together (and having fun!) in no time.

The 700 MHz band was originally used to broadcast analog TV channels, but the transition to digital TV made them available for auction in 2008. Verizon won Block A during that auction, along with U.S. Cellular, with licenses covering urban areas, while AT&T was the biggest buyer, acquiring 227 licenses in the sale.

NHL Lockout Over, Training Camps Set To Open Ahead Of 2013 Season

NEW YORK -- NHL hockey is finally back, and this time it's official.

Nearly one week after a tentative labor deal was agreed to by the league and its players, the sides agreed to a required memorandum of understanding (MOU) on Saturday night that truly makes the lockout a thing of the past.

Training camps will open on Sunday, and a 48-game regular season will begin next Saturday. The signing of the MOU also paved the way for the NHL to release the long-awaited revised schedule.

Twenty-six of the 30 teams will play on opening day. All games during the season will be played within the two respective conferences.

In all, 720 games will be played over a 99-day regular season. There will be at least one game on each day of the season, that will end on April 27. Again, 26 of 30 teams will be in action that day.

The playoffs will begin on April 30. The latest the Stanley Cup finals will end is June 28.

Teams will play 18 games within their division: four games (two home and two away) against two of the teams in the division, five games (three home and two away) against another team in the division, and five games (two home and three away) against the remaining divisional opponent.

To complete the 720-game schedule, clubs will play three games against each of the 10 remaining non-divisional opponents in their conference.

Outside the division, a team will face five clubs twice at home and once away, and play once at home and twice on the road against the other five teams.

It took another lengthy negotiation to end the four-month lockout. The sides worked on the MOU all week, after a tentative deal was reached last Sunday morning ? the 113th day of the lockout ? and needed all day Saturday to finish it.

The announcement that the deal was signed came several hours after the union easily ratified the tentative agreement that was reached after an all-night, 16-hour bargaining session last weekend.

The more than 700 union members had a 36-hour window from Thursday night until Saturday morning to vote electronically. The NHL board of governors unanimously approved the deal on Wednesday.

The NHL hoped to open camps on Sunday, and that prospect seemed in jeopardy Saturday until the document was signed at 10 p.m. EST.

The new deal is for 10 years, but either side can opt out of it after eight. The previous agreement was in effect for seven seasons.

While this negotiation was long, the sides were able to rescue at least part of the season. The NHL also played a 48-game campaign following a lockout in the 1994-95 season.

The 2004-05 was completely canceled because of a lockout. This one forced the cancellation of 510 regular-season games, the Winter Classic and the All-Star game.

No preseason games will be played in the seven days before the regular season gets under way.

Sen. Jay Rockefeller to Retire After 5 Terms

(CHARLESTON, W.Va.) ? U.S. Sen. Jay Rockefeller, who came to West Virginia as a young man from one of the world?s richest families to work on antipoverty programs and remained in the state to build a political legacy, announced Friday he will not seek a sixth term.

The 75-year-old Democrat?s decision comes at a time when his popularity is threatened because of his support for President Barack Obama, who is wildly unpopular in the state, and his willingness to challenge the powerful coal industry, which he said has used divisive, fear-mongering tactics to wrongly blame the federal government for its problems.

Surrounded by family and dozens of supporters amid a backdrop of photos from past campaigns and public appearances, Rockefeller said the peak moment of his career may have been threatening to keep the Senate in session over Christmas break if they didn?t pass the 1992 Coal Act. The measure preserved retirement benefits for miners and their families, and he credited the passing of it with averting a national coal strike.

?In that fight, and so many others, I?ve been proud to stand with the working men and women of America. Miners, steelworkers, teachers and nurses, and everyone who deserves a fair wage, a safe place to work and basic health care,? he said during a 20-minute speech that was more upbeat than somber.

Rockefeller pointed to his heart and said he made ?entirely a personal decision ? it is not a political decision and it has not been easy.?

Rockefeller?s retirement was widely expected and puts the seat held by Democrats since 1958 in jeopardy for the party. Within weeks of November?s elections, Republican U.S. Rep. Shelley Moore Capito vowed to run for the seat in 2014, even if it meant going up against Rockefeller and his storied name. Other Republicans also have been eyeing the seat.

Democrats, who hold a 55-45 edge in the Senate, will be defending 20 seats in next year?s election while Republicans have 13 seats on the ballot. Among the vulnerable Senate Democrats are Alaska?s Mark Begich, Louisiana?s Mary Landrieu and Arkansas? Mark Pryor, all in Republican-leaning states.

?Sen. Rockefeller?s decision not to seek re-election makes West Virginia an even stronger pickup opportunity,? National Republican Senatorial Committee Executive Director Rob Collins said in a statement.

Rockefeller?s retirement is the first of the 2014 class and comes early in the process, giving Democrats time to find a candidate.

In a state that is the second-leading producer of coal, Rockefeller?s positions rankled some who are protective of an industry that brings more than 65,000 jobs to one of the nation?s poorest states. He accuses mining supporters of a combative closed-mindedness in the face of inexpensive natural gas, concerns over climate change and calls for cleaner ways to burn coal. Mining advocates accuse Rockefeller of abandoning them as Obama ramped up scrutiny of Appalachian mountaintop-removal mining operations.

?I know the coal companies are going after me. ? I can live with that, because I know that I am fighting every day for coal miners,? Rockefeller said.

Rockefeller defended his support of Obama and the president?s signature health care overhaul, and insisted that their unpopularity with West Virginians did not influence his decision to retire.

?I?m proud of that work,? he said.

He also has championed stricter coal dust limits in response to a rise in mining-related black lung disease and proposed increased safety measures after the 2010 Upper Big Branch mine disaster killed 29 West Virginians.

Other top issues he has had a hand shaping include child welfare, cybersecurity and foreign trade. He chairs the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, and previously served at the helms of Intelligence and Veterans? Affairs. He co-sponsored legislation creating the states-level Children?s Health Insurance Program, and helped persuade the U.S. Veterans Affairs Department to revisit disability claims arising from what has become known as ?Gulf War Illness.?

U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall, D-W.Va., was elected to Congress in 1976 as Rockefeller won his first term as governor. He said Rockefeller?s sense of humor came out at his first inauguration.

?He told us, ?My name is Rockefeller, but that will not pay our bills,?? Rahall recalled. ?He gave us more than his family name. He pledged his heart, mind and strength to us that day. For almost half a century, Sen. Rockefeller?s service to his state and its families has never wavered from that commitment.?

The great-grandson of famed industrialist John D. Rockefeller first arrived in West Virginia as a volunteer with the VISTA national service program in 1964. Within two years, he had won election to the Legislature, and then as secretary of state in 1968. After a failed run for governor in 1972 and four years as president of West Virginia Wesleyan College, Rockefeller won his first term as governor.

Toward the end of his second term, he narrowly captured the U.S. Senate seat of a retiring Jennings Randolph in 1984. He won by comfortable margins in each of his five terms.

Rockefeller hails from a family of many achievers: In addition to the successes of his oil billionaire great-grandfather, two uncles, Nelson Rockefeller and Winthrop Rockefeller, served as governors of New York and Arkansas, respectively. Rockefeller?s father, John D. Rockefeller III, was a well-known philanthropist and founded the Asia Society, while his uncle David Rockefeller ran Chase Manhattan Bank.

?West Virginia has become my life and my cause,? Rockefeller said. ?I never, ever doubt what it is I?m trying to do. West Virginia provides that to me in the form of fantastically hard-working, tough, warm-hearted people.?

Rockefeller became the state?s senior senator upon the 2010 death of Robert C. Byrd, a fellow Democrat and the longest-serving member of Congress. In his remaining time in office, he said, he plans to focus now on the fight over federal spending, taxes, the debt limit and the future of Medicaid.

?I will spend the next couple of years thinking of what I can do to continue to fight for the causes I believe in,? Rockefeller said. ?I will not be leaving West Virginia. West Virginia will always be my home.?
