WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama on Wednesday congratulated Mitt Romney on securing the Republican presidential nomination, a gesture coupled with a new line of attack on the GOP challenger that portrays his economic record while governor of Massachusetts as a failure.

The president called Romney and told him "he looked forward to an important and healthy debate about America's future," Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt said. Romney's campaign said the call was "brief and cordial." Both men wished each other's families well during the upcoming race.

Romney's primary win in Texas on Tuesday pushed him past the 1,144-delegate threshold he needed to claim the nomination.

Obama took the formal step of congratulating his opponent even as his team looked to shift to the Massachusetts story under Romney. In a five-page memorandum from senior Obama campaign adviser David Axelrod, the Obama camp cast Romney as poor steward of the Massachusetts economy during his 2003-2007 tenure as governor.

"When it comes to Mitt Romney and his economic philosophy the facts are clear ? it didn't work then, and it won't work now," Axelrod wrote.

Romney's campaign, meanwhile, was bringing attention to failed stimulus projects under Obama and federal money given to green energy companies like Solyndra, a solar firm that received hundreds of millions of dollars from the government only to go bankrupt.

The competing attack-lines came as Romney pivoted from a long primary slog to the Republican nomination and a new summertime window to sway voters who have not yet fully tuned into the presidential campaign. Romney hopes to present himself as a worthy replacement for Obama who can help revitalize a slow-moving economy, the most important issue for voters.

The country is "just beginning a general election, we've gone through a primary ... not a lot of people focus time on the characteristics of a new candidate like myself, and people will get to know me better. My guess is they're going to get to know more about me than they'd like to by the time we're finished," Romney said in an interview on Fox News that aired Wednesday but was taped over the weekend.

For months, Obama and his allies have signaled plans to target Romney's Massachusetts record, with advisers noting that the state's economy lagged in job creation and saw an increase in debt while he was governor. The critique builds upon a line of attack this month of Romney's record at private equity firm Bain Capital, which Obama's team contends led to job losses and bankrupt companies even while Bain profited.

"Whether companies succeeded or failed, Romney Economics netted huge profits for him and his investors, but sometimes proved devastating for the middle-class workers whose jobs, benefits and pensions were put at risk," Axelrod wrote in the memo released Wednesday.

Axelrod sought to link Romney's Bain record with his Massachusetts experience by noting that Romney ran for governor on the basis of his private-sector background. "Under Gov. Romney, the Massachusetts economy was not at the top or even in the middle, but close to the bottom of all the states," he wrote.

Republicans contend that Obama's critique of the Bain record will backfire because it will give voters the impression that he is anti-business. The focus on Obama's green energy record, including Energy Department funding for companies like Solyndra, gives Romney a chance to rebut Bain because Republicans say Obama essentially played the role of venture capitalist by investing government money in green energy companies.

On Tuesday, Romney raised money in Las Vegas with Donald Trump, the real estate mogul who has stoked doubts about whether Obama was born in America. It was the start of a weeklong push to raise millions of dollars during a West Coast trip designed to help Romney bring in as much cash as possible ahead of a ramped-up campaign schedule later this summer.

The former Massachusetts governor was looking to take advantage of his official claiming of the nomination, a triumph of endurance for a candidate who came up short four years ago and had to fight hard this year as voters flirted with a carousel of GOP rivals. According to the Associated Press count, Romney surpassed the 1,144 delegates needed to win the nomination by winning 105 delegates in the Texas primary, pushing his total to 1,191 delegates.

Romney must now fire up conservatives who still doubt him while persuading swing voters that he can do a better job fixing the nation's struggling economy than Obama. In Obama, he faces a well-funded candidate with a proven campaign team in an election that will be heavily influenced by the economy.

Romney has scheduled fundraisers this week in wealthy California enclaves like Hillsborough, near San Francisco, and Beverly Hills. He has at least one major fundraising event every day for the rest of the week, as well as a series of smaller events.

Obama has scheduled a fundraising blitz Friday in Minneapolis and Chicago.

Just in time for the summer season, so-called robot lifeguards are hitting the beach on both coasts of the U.S.

?E.M.I.L.Y. is a means to assist lifeguards and first responder who respond to drowning victims,? Bob Lautrup, the robot?s co-inventor and president of Hydonalix told me Monday.

?It is a tool, not a replacement, but it is a way to deliver floatation to a drowning victim at a long distance.??

The lifeguards are essentially remote-controlled jet-ski-like buoys that can reach and stabilize victims as they wait for a human rescue.

The buoy can travel at speeds up 25 miles per hour (any faster and it would be considered a projectile) and will stay afloat with?up to?four people hanging on to it.?

E.M.I.L.Y. stands for Emergency Integrated Lifesaving Lanyard. Lautrup?s company Hydronalix unveiled the concept two and a half years ago and recently starting selling commercial versions.

The Los Angeles County Lifeguards at Zuma Beach in Malibu helped improve the design of the prototype and are the first to put the $10,000 tool to use. (Check NBC Los Angeles? ?video of it ?in action.)

E.M.I.L.Y. is also being deployed in Depot Bay, Oregon and Westerly, Rhode Island, noted Lautrup.

Since E.M.I.L.Y.?s unveiling, it has gained safety features such as a screen on the intake valve of the jet pump to prevent little kids? fingers and long hair from getting sucked into the machinery.

"That took us a little bit of effort to make sure that we did it in a way which met safety objectives buy also in a way that did not wipe out the efficiency of the jet pump," Lautrup noted.

They?ve also added hand loops on the side to make it easier for victims to hold on as they wait for a rescue and outfitted some versions with a rope so that it can be pulled in to shore.

Future versions may come with the option of a sonar scanner to look for objects and people trapped below the surface.

While E.M.I.L.Y. isn?t a replacement for human lifeguards, it is a welcome addition to the beach and nice to see a friendly-robot like technology out to save human lives, not to destroy them.

BEIRUT (Reuters) - U.N. observers said on Wednesday 13 bodies had been discovered bound and shot in eastern Syria, days after a massacre of 108 civilians, nearly half of them children, ignited a world outcry.

Syrian activists said the victims were army defectors killed by Assad's forces, but it was not possible to verify their accounts.

Outrage at last Friday's mass killings in the Syrian town of Houla, documented by U.N. monitors, prompted a host of Western countries to step up pressure on Syria on Tuesday by expelling its senior diplomats, and to press Russia and China to allow tougher action by the U.N. Security Council.

Wednesday's observer report underlined how a peace plan drafted by international envoy Kofi Annan has failed to stem bloodshed or bring Syria's government and opposition to the negotiating table.

Major-General Robert Mood, the Norwegian head of the observer mission, said the corpses had been found with their hands tied behind their backs and signs that some had been shot in the head from close range.

"General Mood is deeply disturbed by this appalling and inexcusable act," a statement issued by the observer mission said. "He calls on all parties to exercise restraint and end the cycle of violence for the sake of Syria and the Syrian people."

The U.N. observers said the 13 dead men had been found on Tuesday evening in Assukar, about 50 km (31 miles) east of the city of Deir al-Zor.

Video footage posted by activists shows the bodies face down on the ground, hands tied behind their backs, with dark pools of what could be blood around their heads and torsos. Mood did not apportion any blame for the killings.

U.N. peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous said in New York on Tuesday that the Syrian army and "shabbiha" militiamen supporting Assad were "probably" responsible for massacring 108 people in Houla with artillery, tanks, small arms and knives. Syria denied any responsibility and blamed Islamist "terrorists" - its term for rebel forces.

Trying to save his seven-week-old peace plan from collapse, U.N.-Arab League envoy Annan told Assad in Damascus on Tuesday that Syria was at a tipping point, but there was no let-up in violence, with more than 100 people killed the same day, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Diplomats said the U.N. Human Rights Council would meet in Geneva on Friday to consider the Houla killings, the fourth such grilling Syria has faced since an anti-Assad revolt erupted in March 2011, inspired by Arab uprisings elsewhere.

"It's all materializing very quickly. It's going to have huge support," said one official. The United States, Qatar, Turkey and the European Union led the push for the session.

Assad has so far proved impervious to international scolding and Western sanctions for his ferocious crackdown on peaceful demonstrators and armed insurgents, and has failed to return troops and tanks to barracks as required by the Annan plan.

However, the U.N. observers sent in to monitor a notional ceasefire were able to verify the horrors in Houla, producing a wave of world revulsion hard for Moscow and Beijing to ignore.

But China and Russia have stuck to their rejection of any intervention or U.N.-backed penalties to force Assad to change course, while backing Annan's peace drive, the only broadly accepted initiative to halt the bloodletting in Syria.

The West is averse to military intervention, although French President Francois Hollande said on Tuesday that could change if the U.N. Security Council backed it - something that is not possible unless veto-wielding members Russia and China allow it.

Turkey joined other countries including the United States, Britain, France and Germany in expelling Syrian diplomats in protest at the Houla massacre, saying unspecified international "measures" would follow if crimes against humanity continued.

But Iran, itself at odds with the West over its disputed nuclear work, decried foreign criticism of its Arab ally.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani accused U.S. and other Western officials of seeking to "prepare the ground for a new crisis" over Syria, Iran's Press TV website reported.

"The Majlis (parliament) condemns the opportunistic intervention of certain countries in Syria and the U.S. terrorist measures and unwise warmongering messages," he said.

EXPULSIONS

Stung by the expulsion of its diplomats around the world, Syria told the Dutch charge d'affaires to leave. She was one of the few senior Western diplomats left in Damascus.

Russia's Foreign Ministry said the expulsion of Syrian diplomats was "counter-productive".

Despite the diplomatic deadlock, Annan, a former U.N. secretary-general, is pressing on with his mission.

"It is important to find a solution that will lead to a democratic transition in Syria and find a way of ending the killings as soon as possible," he said after talks in Jordan. on Wednesday. "With goodwill and hard work, we can succeed."

Yet it is hard to see where a breakthrough might come from.

"China opposes military intervention and does not support forced regime change," Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin said, apparently responding to Hollande's suggestion.

Russia also reasserted its hostility to military action or to any further Security Council measures beyond a non-binding statement that it backed on Sunday condemning the Houla killings.

"We believe consideration in the Security Council of any new measures to influence the situation now would be premature," said Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov.

Annan's deputy, Jean-Marie Guehenno, was to brief the council later in the day on his boss's talks with Assad.

Russia and China have twice vetoed Western-backed council resolutions condemning Syria's violent response to dissent.

"The West should not expect China and Russia's cooperation if it insists on dictating its own values and standards to the world ... It will instead find China and Russia standing in its way," said the Global Times, which is published in Beijing by the Communist Party's People's Daily.

Wary Western governments have so far avoided any direct or indirect military involvement in Syria, whose sectarian-tinged conflict has already sent refugees spilling into Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey and could further destabilize the Middle East.

In this day and age it is almost impossible to maintain a decent standard of living on one paycheck, but in a family where children are involved it is not always feasible for both dad and mom to have a job outside of the home. Though Christianity has recently become the dominant religion in South Korea, the country had been a primarily Buddhist land for nearly all of its history. Buddha?s Birthday, which falls on May 28th this year, is a major celebration across the peninsula. And the week-long Lotus Lantern Festival which precedes it is an engaging reaffirmation of the country?s traditional faith.

The festival kicked off last Saturday with a host of events in Yongdusan Park, in Nampo-Dong. A collection of floats were on display ? automated dragons, Buddhas, fire-breathing peacocks ? and the park was packed with both monks and people out looking for a bit of fun. This wasn?t the most somber or conservative of religious festivals; one of the events was a B-Boy break-dancing competition.

A group of tents in the park constituted the Arts & Crafts center and, walking past, we were immediately targeted for participation by an overly-enthusiastic volunteer. She sat us down next to kids, where we created toy lanterns. Then she grabbed our arms and led us the ?ink stamping? section, where we pounded out Buddhist designs. Then she pushed us over to the ?wishing ribbon? section, where we wrote down our names and our dreams for the future. ?My name is Mike, and I wish for a world free from the scourge of Arts & Crafts!?

The festival-closing parade on Sunday night was a colorful event. We were surprised how few onlookers were lined up on Daechung Road to watch it pass, but then? most of the city was in the parade. Group after massive group of waving, lantern-carriers passed by, along with neon-colored float and the occasional marching band. We followed the final group up to Yongdusan Park, where there was a fireworks show followed by a concert of traditional drumming.

CANNES, France (AP) ? Nicole Kidman's red carpet date travelled for 35 hours to join her in Cannes.

The actress's husband ? musician Keith Urban ? made the trip from Sydney, where's he's been filming "The Voice," to escort her up the famous Palais stairs at the Cannes Film Festival for the screening of her film, "The Paperboy."

And Kidman says his effort meant "everything" to her: "As long as he's there, he's my rock, everything's fine. I feel a little out to sea if he's not there."

Not that she didn't know what she was doing. It's the star's fifth time in Cannes, so she's used to the huge photo calls, press conferences and international interviews in the palm-tree scattered French coastal resort.

This time Kidman has two movies showing ? "The Paperboy," which is competing for the Palme d'Or top prize, and, outside of competition, the HBO movie "Hemingway & Gellhorn."

"The Paperboy," director Lee Daniels' steamy Southern noir in which she stars with Zac Efron and Matthew McConaughey, received mixed reactions at press screenings before the premiere ? so the cast were delighted when the audience took to their feet to clap for 15 minutes after seeing it.

While a teary Efron described the ovation as one of the most profound moments of his life and the rest of the cast was overwhelmed, Kidman remained dry-eyed ? if appreciative.

"We got an amazing standing ovation, which was great. This is my fifth time so I've had many, many, many different reactions," she said in an interview with The Associated Press. "That's the longest standing 'O' I've ever gotten at Cannes."

"Lee was crying, but I wasn't crying. I cry at my kids, I cry with my family, I don't really cry outside of that ? that's the stuff that brings me to tears!" Kidman said. "All of this other stuff, the glitter, and those sort of things, I'm more sort of immune to at this stage. It's probably because I've been doing it for so long."

She credits putting showbiz further down her list of priorities with keeping her relationship on an even keel, even if it does involve a lot of international travel.

"Keith and I have been at this for a long time. We know where it all stands, so there's kind of a practicality in a sense," she explained.

While that doesn't sound very romantic, Kidman says they manage to keep it going, even on the road.

"We can have a really cool life together because that's what matters. In terms of romance, for us, that's so much more important than any of this," she says, gesturing to the lights and the cameras pointing at her.

The 65th Cannes Film Festival runs to Sunday, when the jury sits down to choose its prizewinners.

After the?2011 List?was chided for including only two women, List editor Nicole Periroth wrote in a?response?that women just weren?t pursuing a venture capital (VC) career path: ?I hope the dearth of women on this year?s list is a sober wake-up call?for everyone.?

But as I?ve written before in this column, women are sometimes held back by a lack of role models. In other words,?you can?t be what you can?t see.

Five extraordinary women were honored on this year?s Midas List. Although five in 100 falls short of industry expectations (female partners made up 8.5% of Midas List-eligible venture capital firms last year), lamenting the shortage of women in VC does nothing to solve the pipeline problem.

To make change in any field, we need smart, brave, and determined front-runners to break down barriers and lead the way. The five women on the Midas List represent just that?a slate of role models for the coming generation of investors.

With an MBA from Cornell University and a BA in psychology, she spent 28 years on Wall Street before shifting to Silicon Valley venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers in late 2010.

Born in China?s Fujian Province, Lu focuses her investments largely in East Asia. Her big win was the $1.24 billion IPO of e-commerce giant Dangdang (?the Amazon.com of China?), but Lu?s portfolio at DCM includes businesses in diverse fields like healthcare, events, and communications. Her background is in investment banking and consulting, and she has a master?s degree in international studies.

Theresia Gouw Ranzetta: #92

Ranzetta earned her way back onto the Midas List (up one spot from #93) for her success with security company Imperva?s nearly $400 million IPO. Her investments at Accel Partners also include female-focused consumer companies like Glam Media, ModCloth, and LearnVest. Although she spent a few years in consulting and tech, most of her career has been in venture capital. Ranzetta did her undergraduate work in engineering and then earned an MBA at the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Based in Shanghai, Lee focuses on the Chinese market for GGV Capital. She started her career in electronic warfare technology, and has been in the VC industry for a decade where she made her way onto the Midas List for her role in the success of Chinese companies HiSoft and 21Vianet. Lee earned bachelor?s and master?s degrees in engineering, and she holds an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.

Adele Oliva: #97

One of the very few life sciences investors on the 2012 Midas List, Oliva made a name for herself with the $525 million acquisition of Ascent Healthcare Solutions. Prior to starting her career in investing in 1997, Oliva worked in marketing and business development in the healthcare sector. She has a bachelor?s in finance and earned an MBA from Cornell University.

Playing With the Boys

Featured on the Midas List with 95 of their industry?s top male investors, the female honorees are used to being part of the boys club. ?I?m accustomed to the environment,? said Oliva of her role in a male-dominated industry. Another honoree bristled at being called a female VC. ?I?m a VC, period,? she explained.

When I asked Lee what it?s like to be a female venture capitalist, she laughed. ?We have to work harder to establish our networks. There?s no ?old girls? club.? We have to compete [with the men].?

Carl J. Schramm, president and CEO of the Kauffman Foundation, thinks VC looks a lot like the legal profession back in the 1980s. ?The venture capital industry is among the last bastions of male dominance in the business world,? he explained.

?

What Women Bring to VC

But why is it so important to have more women in venture capital? The women who are there offer good perspective.

?I?m a techie,? explained Lee. ?I can analyze business plans logically. But venture capital is not all quantitative. There?s a qualitative element?a sixth sense?that women bring to VC. From reading management teams to doing due diligence, observing interactions is an important part of this job.?

In addition to bringing a different perspective, Oliva shared another reason why she believes there is a huge benefit to diversity in teams: ?Women bring a different network.? Ranzetta agrees: ?As the range of experiences that an investor brings to the table gets wider, it increases the aperture for entrepreneurs they have access to.?

The Growth of Entrepreneurship Among Women

A network of women in the venture investing community can have an important impact on the rising number of female entrepreneurs looking for funding and mentorship. Trish Costello, CEO of the Center for Venture Education, sees something unique in the women who are emerging in the venture capital field: ?[They] see their access to women-led deals as offering comparative advantage.?

When she saw an increase in the number of female entrepreneurs in China, Lee wanted to do something to build a community. She helped create an informal group for aspiring women entrepreneurs, allowing them to connect with each other and with female investors. ?Mentorship is important to me. I?m very happy to sit down and talk to people.?

Oliva also has fondness for women who start businesses. ?Using pattern recognition over the years, I have found that if a woman has reached a certain level of achievement, there?s a high likelihood that she?s exceptional. There are just so many screens along the way.?

Ranzetta couldn?t be more excited about the increase in women entrepreneurs and executives. ?The entrepreneurial leaders of today are the pipeline for tomorrow?s investors,? she says. ?In five to 10 years, I think we?ll see a lot more women in VC.?

With?scores of women?chomping at the bit to show the world of venture investing that they mean business, it is an exciting time for women in VC. But more importantly, it?s an exciting time for the VC industry as a whole. When it comes to the importance of women and minorities having a place at the investing table, Ranzetta put it best: ?A diversity of viewpoints increases the chances that you?ll make an off-the-beaten path investment. Not all of those investments work out, but some do. And when they do?that?s the key to success in this industry.?

BETHALTO, Ill. (AP) ? He was known as George Blackburn for most of his life, but after his divorce last fall he wanted to start life over. So Blackburn changed his name to Led Zeppelin II.

Zeppelin's daughter, Mindy Baker, says he saw the iconic British rock band about 20 times in the 60s and 70s and had talked about changing his name for years before the divorce. Baker, of Seattle, says Zeppelin died of a heart attack on May 18, aged 64.

"Led Zeppelin II," released in 1969, was the band's first album to reach No. 1 in the U.S

?I am very excited to share our first Foster Care Mother Interview with you. Alison has some great insight and advice to parents considering or who are currently involved in Foster Care. She has such an amazing attitude and love for these children who need her support. Thank you Alison for sharing your experience!

How many biological children do you have?

We have 3 biological children and 4 children who were adopted.? Years ago, I heard someone specify that their children *were* adopted, but now are just ?their kids?, no longer needing to be labeled as adopted.? I loved the idea! I was often asked questions like, ?Which children aren?t your real ones/the adopted ones?? and I would respond, ?The cute ones.?? The kids would try to keep from smiling as the person glanced at them for a moment (maybe trying to find the ugly ones??) before they realized that I was teasing.

How many foster children do you have, or have you had??

We became foster parents when we were married for 2 months and had an empty house.? We parented (I use the term loosely since we really had no clue what to do) teen boys at first.? We cared for 3 teen boys, one at a time.? We were thrilled to become pregnant 6 months later and we decided to parent younger children.? We welcomed sisters who were 3 & 5 yo.? Years later we did respite care for a few children/babies & since have had 3 sibling groups: 2yog & 5yob, 5yog & 8yob, 3yog & 5yob & now a 5yob.

What made you decide on foster care??

Honestly, because we knew we could do it.? I am the oldest of 5 and my hubby is the oldest boy of 10 so it seemed very lonely just the two of us.? We have always been given a preference in age/behaviors/etc so we only took what we felt comfortable handling.

How did you you start the process of becoming a foster parent?

We first provided foster care through a private agency which did contract work for the state.? They took more difficult placements, which in reflection may have not been the wisest choice when first starting out. We switched over to the state and have been with them for 18 years.

Did having foster children in your home ever effect the life of your biological children?

Some of our children have had anger issues which caused them to lash out at us and the other children.? It takes extra patience to remember that their behavior was because they had (usually) been victims themselves (of abuse/neglect/poor or no parenting) and needed to relearn appropriate behavior.? Our adopted/bio children have had normal sibling issues with foster placements. ?

Did you ever adopt or attempt to adopt any of the foster children?

All four of our adoptions were through the State of Utah.

Did you have to keep in contact with the biological parents of your foster children? If so, what was that experience like for you??

Most times we had contact with bio parents at visits and meetings.? We tried to put ourselves in their position and imagine the anger, sadness, heartache, frustration, regret that they were likely experiencing.? We really were not much different than they were.? If we had not been given the life experiences we were given, we could be in their same situation.? We still have contact with some of our foster children?s families and it is wonderful to see their families heal and be successful.

Now, we maintain contact with all of our adopted children?s biological families (moms/dads/aunts/grandmas, depending on the family).? We weren?t sure how this would work to begin with, but since all of them had fresh memories of their original families, we felt it was in the best interest of our kids to be supportive of these relationships and of these people who also loved our kids but unfortunately hadn?t been able to parent them at that time.? We stay in contact on Facebook/phone calls & visits.? They have come to dance recitals, baptisms, family parties, etc.? It varies, but we see most of them about once a year.

What was the most positive result of being a foster parent?

It is so rewarding to see the progress that a child makes in your home after being removed from a stressful situation, and helping them learn how to just ?be a kid.?? We have heard from families, years later, and are so thrilled to hear that things ?worked out? because we were there to help with the transition while people healed.

What was the most negative result of being a foster parent?

There are some negatives, but they are small when weighed against the positives.? We have had things broken & our basement flooded, but nothing vastly different than what you?d expect from a child not in foster care.? The foster care agency was also great about helping us find resources to minimize and restore the damages.? Most children who are new to our home go through a period of testing as they learn what we expect in our home and what our family routine is.? It requires a bit more supervision and reminding as they are learning and testing boundaries.

What is something that you would want someone who is considering foster care to know??

Try to keep things in perspective of a child who has had their reality and everything they have known, disappear.? Even if their situation wasn?t what you would consider ?ideal?, it was what they knew and it was ?theirs?.? Children are wonderful about learning to cope, but the stress will exhibit itself in their behavior which may seem naughty but is often just them trying to communicate ?Help!? I?m stressed.? Please show me consistency and love.? ?Be supportive and find ways to speak kindly of those they love.? I?ve often said to a child, ?X didn?t make some great choices by ____, but they are still a good person and will always love you.?
